Description

This guy relates to an idea I've had in mind for a long time now but have done very little with so far. The basic premise is a nanotechnological singularity/disaster/revolution (depending on your point of view) resulting in a complete assimilation of all life on Earth by rogue nanotech (and presumably the extinction of humanity in the process, if such hasn't already occurred). But rather than bringing about a dystopian "Gray Goo" catastrophe, the nanotech simply transforms and "streamlines" existing natural organisms, yielding highly refined and efficient but (to our sensibilities) abstract and surreal equivalents of familiar biological forms.

There are many different ways this scenario could play out or forms its expression could take, so this "Nanopenguin" represents only one potential variant. There are also myriad possible variations on this basic theme of "nanotech wildlife" and an evolving "nanotech ecosystem," and I hope to explore as many of these as possible in the future. I really like the challenge of taking something that's typically been treated as a horrific, nightmare scenario and trying to make it aesthetically pleasing, even optimistic.

I should note that though the design aesthetics bear some superficial similarity to the Moebius Fish ([link]), the two concepts are unrelated. Also, the original idea for this one had it exactly upside down from the way it turned out, so feel free to flip it over if you think it works better that way.

EDIT: I filtered it up a bit for artistic purposes, since the Studies ([link]) provide a clear view of the body structure.

Okay, comment applying to all of the nanopenguin pics...

First, awesome, and very pretty, like living moebius strips (like the moebius fish, what). Which way is the "head", though?

Second, that's quite an unusual thought. So a grey goo scenario might not be so bad (i.e. it's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine...)? It would be interesting to see how other animals would have been affected.
