Rajimorphs ([link]) with body designs based on various aircraft prototypes. Biologically speaking, not all these creatures are necessarily derived from ray stock. Some or all of them could be evolved sharks or even whales, and some of the most divergent are just odd enough that I could see them being true aliens rather than derived terrestrial organisms. I could also easily picture these as airborne biological machines rather than naturally occurring marine organisms, perhaps engineered combat drones of some extraterrestrial race. That would actually dovetail nicely with one of the antagonist powers I had in mind for the same universe that spawned the Chimerapes.

The top five designs (A-E) are based primarily on the crazy "Amerika Bomber" concepts ([link]) that German engineers were feverishly churning out towards the end of WWII. The lower three (F-H) are based on more contemporary theoretical aircraft of various nationalities. The entire Arado "555" series of Amerika Bombers can be seen at ([link]). The rest of the Luft '46 site ([link]) is worth checking out just for a chilling look at what Nazi Germany might have gotten off the ground had the war dragged on a little longer.

Orientation and inspiration for each design follows. These are for my buddy Jeff...Happy Birthday, bro!

A: Facing forward (toward viewer); based on a German Arado E-555-7 with a bit of American "Manta" UCAV ([link]) in the mix
B: Top view, facing up and to the right; based primarily on an Arado E-555-11 with a heavy admixture of American XP-67 ([link])
C: Pictured it facing right, but it could just as easily be facing left; based on an Arado E-555-11
D: Facing left; based on an Arado E-555-6
E: Facing left; based on an Arado E-555-10
F: Facing left and up; based on the speculated "F-19" American Stealth fighter design ([link]), a popular subject for toy and model kits in the late '80s prior to the public unveiling of the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter. I've reversed the fore-aft orientation here to reinforce the manta design aesthetic.
G: Facing down and to the left; based very loosely on any number of "diamond" or box wing aircraft concepts ([link] for example)
H: Pictured it facing left, but it could just as easily be facing right; based VERY loosely on a British BAe Kingston/Hawker P1216 ([link])

:woohoo: Ho-yeah! These are excellent!

My vote is for airborne organisms with biological jet propulsion a la Barlowe's bio-jets from Expedition. Tho I don't think that was an option...

Now I gotta dig into these juicy links on WWII esoterica... bliss.
:iconthomastapir:
Thanks, Rob! Hah, I should have known you'd like this.

I hope you enjoy those links and maybe find some good inspiration for your own projects...That Luft '46 stuff especially just blew me away when I first saw it. They had all kinds of crazy stuff on the drawing board--orbital and suborbital bombers, variable geometry (swing-wing) jet aircraft, VTOL concepts...The flying wing from "Indiana Jones" looks positively tame compared to some of the crazy $%!# they were actually working on!
:iconrob-cavanna:
The Luft art link is a bloody goldmine, Tom.

Where did you get the link for that giant diamond wing transport? (from option G). That thing is amazing.
:iconrob-cavanna:
Orbital wha...?!! That is scary/awesome. See -how unreasonable is it to think that they might engineer some mecha?

That Amerika bomber is particularly frightening. Amazing how much it resembles modern stealth bombers and flying wings. I absolutely need to dig into this stuff and integrate it into my project. Finally some good starting points for an airborne mech transport! :D

In reality tho, the ingenuity of these designs, much like the ingenuity of certain figures like Erwin Rommel, were eclipsed by the German High Command's deviations from reality: having no realistic grasp of available resources and tactical necessity.

But many groundbreaking machines did roll off their production lines and set new precedent for technological capability -the V2, the Tiger tanks, the Messerschmitt 262, the tough ass U-boats, etc...

so who knows. There are so many 'what ifs' hanging over that whole conflict. Worthy of endless musing...

I'm glad you like it, Rob!

The "diamond wing" is a sample from Russell Chong's portfolio ([link]). He works on the Clone Wars cartoon and does a lot of amazing ships and planes.

Google searches on "diamond wing," "box wing," and "ring wing" should all yield similar designs...Also, I don't know if this is something you're already familiar with, but try a Google image search on "ekranoplan." I f'in' love those things...They're so cool looking, and for some reason they remain almost unknown outside the niche communities of aviation enthusiasts and modellers.

I have an extreme fondness for G. Mostly because it looks the most odd and that it looks a lot like your nano creatures.

Those Nazi projects always make me shiver, trusty ol' German engineering. But then again some of the things the States think are good ideas also make me shiver. Project Pluto anyone? [link]

Shut up. Do what I tell you. Im not interested. These are just some of the things that you'll be hearing if you answer this ad. I'm an idiot and I don't care about anyone but myself.

Oh it is, totally! (Worthy of endless musing, that is.) re: "amazing how much it resembles modern stealth bombers and flying wings"--some of our designs right up into the modern era are very clearly derived from those "paper planes." Some of their speculative jet bombers look almost exactly like 747-style airliners (which obviously would have been devastating given the technological average of the other aircraft and point (air) defenses at that time), and believe it or not I've even seen a concept for a Nazi ground attack plane that was an absolute dead ringer for the A-10 Thunderbolt (II).

They're expensive to buy, but if you can find them at your library I'd HIGHLY recommend the "Luftwaffe Secret Projects" books:

Strategic Bombers and Ground Attack (Vol. 2 and 3 respectively) are probably my favorite of the three...The "Fighters" book is just as well-written but the art isn't as good. : /
:iconthomastapir:
Whooooa, THAT'S freaky. :omg:
I've read about concepts for nuclear-powered (piloted) bombers that could theoretically stay aloft for weeks, but I've never heard the concept applied to unmanned vehicles. Scary. I guess it works if you're planning to drop the bombs eventually, but what if you don't and need to bring the thing back home for a safe landing...??

Yeah, we've had a lot of scary ideas in the works. My personal favorite is the X-ray laser. That doesn't sound so bad until you find out that the device is pumped with X-rays from hydrogen bombs! :ohnoes:

Thanks, I'm glad you like it, G! I mean, I'm glad you like G. Whatever.
:iconjohnfaa:
Perhaps these were genetically engineered biological aircraft?

The best such idea has to be Project Orion. Mankind's only starship design, it traveled by literally detonating chains of A-Bombs behind it.
