Description

An "'indigenous' posthuman," "native" (for at least several hundred generations) to the tropical island chain of an undeveloped (perhaps officially uncharted) extrasolar world. He may be a highly derived descendant of the Amazons thomastapir.deviantart.com/art…, or may be a product of cross-myoborg breeding. The heavily modified right arm now serves a very specific functional purpose and cultural role: this guy is an oarsman for his tribe.

The "oar" especially, but the rest of the man's body as well, would likely be painted and tattooed with markings indicating his role and status. I was thinking he might also employ additional (fabricated) wooden or bone contrivances that supplement the rowing mechanism or at least make the rowing action more comfortable. Shirow once mentioned watching an ancient Japanese woman using a traditional loom--he remarked that the antique device had become so integrated with her body over time, he had the impression he was seeing a kind of anachronistic cyborg. It would be interesting, I think, if these guys started as myoborgs, produced by the height of human skill at genetic manipulation, and then in their more atavistic state have come full-circle back to a kind of mechanical, albeit primitive, "cyborg."

One of the nice things about these myoborg studies is that they allow me to get away with inadvertent asymmetry, like those legs. XD I'm not wild about this combination of the new paper I've been trying and working with a harder pencil; it just means I end up with a lighter drawing, and more scanner artifacts show up when I bump the contrast. I will undoubtedly return to my old tried-and-true ways, like the atavistic posthuman I am.

So much more I'd like to say about indigenous fishing platforms, traditional maritime map tattooing in Polynesian sailors, the inherent potential instability of myoborg genetic templates, the resemblance to ~M0AI's m0ai.deviantart.com/art/Hecato… (which is ENTIRELY COINCIDENTAL!! though you should check out everything he's ever done), the similarity to Nemo Ramjet's dedicated musical posthumans, etc. But I've got to pack for this trip, so.....

that left arm reminds me of something from World of Goo.

I really like the idea of asymmetry. So many things that I draw and think of are symmetric. I have a hard time getting away from that idea.
